Inspiration for MP 5

If you get a little stuck with this project, here are some things to help you out:
This is Sudden Infant/Joke Lanz.  I would only watch this if you want to have nightmares.  There are a couple of prerecorded samples here, but most of it is his own body looped and distorted.  It would be a pretty esoteric idea for this assignment...it also rules.  So, you know, deal with that.

This is an albeit abstracted version of what we are doing by a group of students at Millsaps.  Don't steal their ideas but you can use them for inspiration.
This is a piece by my friend Kevin who is also an artist.  He did this with a low tech camera and a free online video editor.

Last one.  I WOULDN'T watch this in the library.  This one is both funny and true (meaning his take on art is pretty accurate) but with, well, swearing.

The bottom line for this project is to take a risk.  Who cares what it looks like in the end?

So I am grading everyone's projects...

I am working on grading the class' projects and I realize after reading the sheets that I need to probably be a lot more interactive on my blog and the comments' section of your blogs if this is going to work.  Like they say on Pardon The Interruption "[I] will try to do better tomorrow."

In the meantime watch Annie Clark slay Big Black

Attention Must Be Paid

One of the things I want everyone to think about throughout the quarter is how they view the world and how that may be similar or different from others.  Each artist that we see has historical references in their art work and people who have taught them but what they are choosing to show is solely their specific vision.  In the end, what you are creating should be unique from everyone else in the class because you are unique.  If you have a specific "Big Idea" you want to deal with, ask me and I can point you in the direction of some artists that might challenge and inspire you.

This class, like all classes (and relationships for that matter), will give you back what you put into it.

And now here is something to blow your mind:

Thinking about pushing limits

How do you take something simple and use it in a new way?  What can be invented by turning an object on its head?  How does the object's definition change?

These are questions I think about when explaining the creation of contemporary art to people.  Find your niche.
